{"id":9571,"date":"2017-08-13T11:05:00","date_gmt":"2017-08-13T15:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newvinegrowing.wordpress.com\/?p=9571"},"modified":"2019-12-05T16:57:53","modified_gmt":"2019-12-05T21:57:53","slug":"hold-up-a-mirror-for-yourself-or-ask-someone-else-to-hold-it-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/hold-up-a-mirror-for-yourself-or-ask-someone-else-to-hold-it-for-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Hold up a mirror for yourself, or ask someone else to hold it for you"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cPeople don\u2019t learn from experiences, they learn from the reflection on their experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That quote from Rosie Guagliardo, life and career coach with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innerbrilliancecoaching.com\/\">InnerBrilliance Coaching,\u00a0<\/a>is one of the many insights that&#8217;s stuck with me after I wrote a series of stories about self reflection for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unstuck.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Unstuck<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unstuck, as the name implies, is a website that offers help getting yourself unstuck, whether that&#8217;s from relationship difficulties, challenges at work or an overall sense that your life isn&#8217;t as satisfying as you&#8217;d like. This premise of this self reflection series is that you can&#8217;t get unstuck if you don&#8217;t spend time reflecting so you can notice that you&#8217;re stuck and consider how you got there.<\/p>\n<p>I loved working on these stories because they gave me a different kind of opportunity to explore the kinds of themes I do here, including getting insights like these from experts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIt is possible to experience some type of success without self-reflection \u2013 however, if that success is meaningful to the person is a different story. Many times purpose is the best driving force to help people experience success, but without being in touch with yourself and reflecting on that, we default to what society deems as success,\u201d said<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifecarecounselingstl.com\/\">\u00a0Craig Foust<\/a>, a counselor and therapist.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSelf-reflection is a positive space. It is an imperceptible forward movement,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amandaenayati.com\/\">Amanda Enayati<\/a>, who writes and consults on lowering stress.\u00a0Enayati notes that our culture prizes constant motion and activity, so opting out requires discipline. \u201cIn order to move forward, you have to be in a space where it looks like nothing is happening.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cReflecting on your core values \u2014 the things you care most about \u2014 is the first step to creating purpose,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vicstrecher.com\/\">Vic Strecher<\/a>, a professor at University of Michigan School of Public Health who studies life purpose. \u201cSocrates said that the unexamined life isn\u2019t worth living. Reflective examination of what matters most in your life is the first step.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSelf-reflection can include attending to subtle physical sensations that provide clues about feelings that haven\u2019t quite entered consciousness.
