{"id":6804,"date":"2016-02-07T13:12:16","date_gmt":"2016-02-07T18:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newvinegrowing.wordpress.com\/?p=6804"},"modified":"2019-06-07T13:38:04","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T17:38:04","slug":"multipotentialite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/multipotentialite\/","title":{"rendered":"If you haven&#039;t found one true calling, maybe you&#039;re a multipotentialite"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our society loves a prodigy story.<br \/>\nWe celebrate children who show a musical talent about the time they learn to read then dedicate themselves to developing that natural aptitude\u00a0&#8212; it could be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/blog-network\/kinderlab\/what-makes-child-prodigy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mozart<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0Little <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/stevie-wonder-9536078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stevie Wonder<\/a>\u00a0going strong at 65, minus the Little.<br \/>\nWe love young athletes who obsessively spend nights, weekends and summer camps pursuing an early talent, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/topic\/Venus_Williams.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Venus Williams<\/a>.<br \/>\nWe glorify kids who knew with absolute certainty what they wanted to do for the rest of their lives, then doggedly, stubbornly followed that dream. <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/stevejobsbiography\/recommended-articles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Jobs<\/a> was fascinated with computers by puberty.<br \/>\nBut what of everyone else? That&#8217;s so limiting.<br \/>\nWhat if you weren&#8217;t aware of a\u00a0career choice possibility until later in life?<br \/>\nWhat if a career didn&#8217;t even exist when you were young but now it&#8217;s a perfect fit for you?<br \/>\nWhat if your interests changed as you got older?<br \/>\nWriter and artist Emilie Wapnick gave a TED talk about feeling like there was something wrong with her because she would fall in love with something for a while, then get bored and move on to a new passion.<br \/>\nShe says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"talk-transcript__para\"><span class=\"talk-transcript__para__text\"><span id=\"t-123103\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">This pattern caused me a lot of anxiety,<\/span> <span id=\"t-126866\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">for two reasons.<\/span> <span id=\"t-128460\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">The first was that I wasn&#8217;t sure<\/span> <span id=\"t-131316\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">how I was going to turn any of this into a career.<\/span> <span id=\"t-134353\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">I thought that I would eventually have to pick one thing,<\/span> <span id=\"t-137175\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">deny all of my other passions,<\/span> <span id=\"t-139413\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">and just resign myself to being bored.<\/span> <span id=\"t-143595\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">The other reason it caused me so much anxiety\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"t-145938\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">was a little bit more personal.<\/span> <span id=\"t-148230\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">I worried that there was something wrong with this,<\/span> <span id=\"t-150972\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">and something wrong with me for being unable to stick with anything.<\/span> <span id=\"t-155677\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">I worried that I was afraid of commitment,<\/span> <span id=\"t-158088\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">or that I was scattered, or that I was self-sabotaging,<\/span> <span id=\"t-161573\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">afraid of my own success.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"talk-transcript__para\"><span class=\"talk-transcript__para__text\"><span id=\"t-165261\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">If you can relate to my story and to these feelings,<\/span> <span id=\"t-168999\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">I&#8217;d like you to ask yourself a question<\/span> <span id=\"t-171297\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">that I wish I had asked myself back then.<\/span> <span id=\"t-174796\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">Ask yourself where you learned to assign the meaning of wrong or abnormal<\/span> <span id=\"t-180246\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">to doing many things.<\/span> <span id=\"t-183741\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">I&#8217;ll tell you where you learned it:<\/span> <span id=\"t-185504\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">you learned it from the culture.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why Some of us Don&#039;t Have One True Calling | Emilie Wapnick | TEDxBend\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QJORi5VO1F8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re a career serial monogamist, moving from one seemingly unrelated field to another, or you&#8217;re a hyphenate, simultaneously doing two more more things that appear disconnected, you might want to settle in for 13 minutes and watch.<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll hear Wapnick say that you&#8217;re not a quitter or flaky or waiting for your real passion to show itself. Instead, if you&#8217;re a polymath or Renaissance man, you\u00a0bring three superpowers to your multiple interests.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"talk-transcript__para\"><span class=\"talk-transcript__para__text\"><span id=\"t-415384\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">Idea synthesis.<\/span>\u00a0You can draw inspiration from multiple areas, so you might bring best practices from another industry\u00a0or you might see how two fields of interest click together.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"talk-transcript__para\"><span id=\"t-471095\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\">Rapid learning.<\/span>\u00a0There&#8217;s a Buddhist idea called <a href=\"http:\/\/zenhabits.net\/how-to-live-life-to-the-max-with-beginners-mind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beginner&#8217;s mind<\/a>, where you open yourself up to not knowing, to not making assumptions, and let go of being an expert. Experience being a beginner can teach you how to start learning. Plus you bring your wealth of life experience to that learning.<\/li>\n<li class=\"talk-transcript__para\">Adaptability. The economy is changing, technology is fast moving, so the ability to adapt\u00a0makes you more valuable than someone who fears change.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For many years I&#8217;ve heard that statistic that people my age and younger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.careers-advice-online.com\/career-change-statistics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will change careers seven times in our lives<\/a>. Yet I&#8217;ve still worried that there was something wrong with me when I&#8217;d get bored with a job after a few years. I crave new challenges.<br \/>\nNow as <a href=\"http:\/\/colleennewvine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a marketing consultant<\/a> (a job I&#8217;d never heard of until after college, by the way), I see how my diverse interests help me serve my clients. Sometimes I draw from something I learned\u00a0organizing events as an alumni club president, sometimes it&#8217;s something I&#8217;ve learned writing this blog, other times it&#8217;s insight gained working with a client in a different industry.
