{"id":6408,"date":"2015-11-01T21:34:40","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T02:34:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newvinegrowing.wordpress.com\/?p=6408"},"modified":"2019-06-07T13:38:06","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T17:38:06","slug":"light-up-your-night-bike-riding-to-stay-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/light-up-your-night-bike-riding-to-stay-safe\/","title":{"rendered":"Light up your night bike riding to stay safe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now that we&#8217;ve fallen back to standard time, it gets dark early in New York \u2014 sunset tonight was at 4:52 p.m. and of course it gets even earlier between now and\u00a0winter solstice.<br \/>\nBecause we like to bike around Brooklyn, that means we&#8217;re riding in the dark a lot these days.<br \/>\nI cringe every time I see a fellow biker with no lights. Not only is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/html\/bicyclists\/biketips.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">having a white front light and a red rear light the law<\/a>, it&#8217;s just good common sense to make yourself visible to drivers, pedestrians and other bikers. You wouldn&#8217;t drive your car at night without turning on your lights, would you?<br \/>\nMeanwhile I get frequent compliments and comments because I am lit up like a Christmas tree when I ride.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6410\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/colleen-with-bike-lights-and-vest.jpg\" alt=\"Colleen with bike lights and vest\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/colleen-with-bike-lights-and-vest.jpg 640w, https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/colleen-with-bike-lights-and-vest-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/colleen-with-bike-lights-and-vest-370x278.jpg 370w, https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/colleen-with-bike-lights-and-vest-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Even though <a href=\"http:\/\/bikeleague.org\/commutingdata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">there are more of us biking<\/a>, I assume many drivers spent decades with the roads all theirs and they\u00a0might not be\u00a0used to looking for us. If I&#8217;m flashing\u00a0like a rolling disco, I make it harder for drivers to forget I&#8217;m there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here&#8217;s some of what I use to keep myself visible:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightz-ltd.com\/product\/brightz-blue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">bright blue flashing lights from Bike Brightz<\/a>, which I ziptie to my frame so I\u2019m visible from the side \u2014 I&#8217;m a big fan of Bike Brightz both because you can see them from an impressive distance and because one of my husband&#8217;s lights died shortly after we bought it and the company replaced it quickly and cheerfully<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/20-Led-Submersible-Wire-String-Light-7ft-Battery-Fairy-light-Wedding-decoration-\/151067729487?ssPageName=ADME%3AL%3AOC%3AUS%3A3160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">fairy light wires<\/a>\u00a0strung through my spokes, which sort of become a blue blur as I speed up<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00KKCBY3K?psc=1&amp;redirect=true&amp;ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">super bright front flashlight<\/a> that can either strobe or act as a headlight<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-caption-text\">the <a title=\"Vespretty, Sequins\" href=\"http:\/\/shop.vespertinenyc.com\/product\/vespert-sequins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vespretty<\/a> vest from NYC company Vespertine, featuring silver sequins and 3M Scotchlite reflective fabric \u2014\u00a0I probably get more comments on this vest than anything else about my safety gear, because it&#8217;s so flashy. I wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/vespertinenyc.com\/vesper-spotlight-september-16-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a guest blog post for Vespertine<\/a>\u00a0because I love that they make safety fun and pretty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\nAdding all these lights to my New York bike was inspired by Ritchie and Mindy Jordan in New Orleans, organizers of a weekly cruiser ride and hosts of a series of parties to help NOLA bikers funkify their wheels. People add Mardi Gras beads, sequins, tassels, toys, pipe cleaners, anything that speaks to their imagination and desire to make a one-of-a-kind bike.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyclelove.net\/2012\/05\/ritchie-new-orleans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ritchie and Mindy&#8217;s bikes<\/a> are rolling works of art. We bought bikes in 2011 that they&#8217;ve housed for us since, loaning them out when we aren&#8217;t in town and requiring\u00a0anyone who uses them to add one more piece of bling.\u00a0Often when we arrive in New Orleans and pick up our bikes, they have even more lights than the last time we saw them, like these battery-powered Christmas lights on the handlebars and the glowing butterfly wings.<em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/em>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1441030698365_9131\"><a href=\"http:\/\/vespertinenyc.com\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Colleen-on-Sweet-Lady-Blue-2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1029\" src=\"http:\/\/vespertinenyc.com\/d\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Colleen-on-Sweet-Lady-Blue-2014-580x773.jpg\" alt=\"The party's on two wheels!\" width=\"580\" height=\"773\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So if you ride\u00a0at night with a pitch-black bike because you&#8217;ve thought lights were sort of lame, just a requirement you&#8217;re supposed to follow, I submit that it can be a lot of fun to add way more lights than you probably need and really ensure no one misses you as you roll by.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I cringe every time I see a fellow biker with no lights.
