{"id":6318,"date":"2015-04-19T05:45:00","date_gmt":"2015-04-19T09:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newvinegrowing.wordpress.com\/?p=6318"},"modified":"2019-06-07T13:38:08","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T17:38:08","slug":"realizing-hosting-is-part-of-my-lifes-purpose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/realizing-hosting-is-part-of-my-lifes-purpose\/","title":{"rendered":"Realizing hosting is part of my life&#039;s purpose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It started, as so many good things do, with talking with a good friend over a boozy brunch.<br \/>\nI met with<a href=\"http:\/\/amandahirsch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Amanda Hirsch<\/a> to talk about our 2015 goals, both in life and in business, and how we could support each other in achieving them. Since I&#8217;d recently read and blogged about <a href=\"https:\/\/newvinegrowing.wordpress.com\/2015\/02\/02\/vic-strecher-studies-what-gives-life-purpose-after-he-loses-his-own\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vic Strecher&#8217;s graphic novel, &#8220;On Purpose,&#8221;\u00a0<\/a>I was focused on living my life in sync with my highest values more than on simply drumming up more sales. I went to Austin strictly to network with the abundance of smart people in town for a conference that&#8217;s expanded from its tech roots to be a multi-disciplinary thinkfest. Without conference sessions to structure my day, I put much more advance prep into how I would spend my time.<br \/>\nI reviewed the <a href=\"http:\/\/schedule.sxsw.com\/?conference=interactive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extensive list of impressive speakers<\/a> looking for people I should meet, and found so many people whose bios or talk descriptions made me wish I could attend. That triggered\u00a0a plan B, hopping onto <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opentable.com\/trio-four-seasons-austin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenTable to reserve a table for breakfast<\/a>, then starting to invite strangers to join me.<br \/>\nWe ended up with six people sharing a long, leisurely breakfast that so exceeded my expectations. Everyone was more inspiring, warm and open than I could have dared to hope. At the end, everyone hugged, exchanged cards and got a group photo. Our little morning gathering included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jillianlauren.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jillian Lauren<\/a>, who was a college dropout, a drug addict and a\u00a0concubine in the Prince of Brunei\u2019s harem\u00a0before she and her husband, the bassist for Weezer, adopted an Ethiopian child with special needs. Her latest book is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jillianlauren.com\/everything-you-ever-wanted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Everything You Ever Wanted.&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AmandaEnayatiAuthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amanda Enayati<\/a>, an author and columnist who writes about happiness, creativity, technology, and\u00a0identity\u00a0for numerous outlets. She has a new book,<a href=\"http:\/\/amandaenayati.com\/books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> &#8220;Seeking Serenity,&#8221; <\/a>out this year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/annabellegurwitch.com\/blog2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Annabelle\u00a0Gurwitch<\/a>, an actress, activist and author whose most recent book is <a href=\"http:\/\/annabellegurwitch.com\/blog2\/uncategorized\/i-see-you-made-an-effort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;I See You Made An Effort: compliments, indignities and survival stories from the edge of 50.&#8221;<\/a> Her book, &#8220;You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up,&#8221; is now a theatrical play in its third national tour.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000;font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jamesmhodson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Hodson<\/a>, who is launching <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iqzic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IQzic<\/a>, a\u00a0music discovery website. His LinkedIn summary says it well, &#8220;&#8230;. from machine shops to flight &amp; tank simulators, from Europe, to India, from simple mechanical design to complex systems engineering, from IT to Finance, from Operations to HR &amp; Legal, from Sole Proprietor to State Government to Fortune 500, to Partnerships of 2 to 3000, to Entertainment&#8230; what a wonderful journey it has been. It sounds like it is all over the board, but in 31 years, the path actually makes sense.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li>and <a href=\"https:\/\/sph.umich.edu\/faculty-profiles\/profile.cfm?uniqname=strecher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Strecher, a professor at the University of Michigan<\/a>, who the\u00a0graphic novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dungbeetle.org\/buy-the-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;On Purpose,&#8221;<\/a> about what gives life meaning after losing his own purpose when his 19-year-old daughter died.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Amanda listened to me excitedly describe this table of strangers spending the morning together, and how much it made my heart soar when I got follow up messages from several people that our breakfast was the highlight of SXSW for them &#8212; then she finally interrupted.<br \/>\nI wasn&#8217;t taking notes, but in my memory her voice sounds something like, &#8220;Don&#8217;t you see that hosting events like that IS your purpose?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe pointed to\u00a0the frequent events I\u00a0plan, from <a href=\"https:\/\/newvinegrowing.wordpress.com\/2012\/04\/28\/livingroomshows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">living room concerts\u00a0<\/a>to <a href=\"https:\/\/newvinegrowing.wordpress.com\/2014\/04\/06\/pointers-on-hosting-simple-weekday-suppers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spaghetti dinners<\/a>, and said those gatherings are making people&#8217;s lives better. I am\u00a0bringing people joy by giving them experiences they wouldn&#8217;t otherwise have and connecting them with other interesting people.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s no secret<a href=\"https:\/\/newvinegrowing.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/13\/party-pointers-from-a-hostess-who-learned-later-in-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> I enjoy party planning<\/a>. A former boss once called me The Organatrix. But I&#8217;d always thought of hostessing as an extracurricular, not as core to my purpose in life.<br \/>\nAmanda helped me reflect on how what I&#8217;m doing in my social life is central to my values of making the world better and giving people joy &#8212; and it led naturally into our conversation about co-hosting an all-day marketing workshop.<br \/>\nHosting <a href=\"https:\/\/newvinegrowing.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/09\/upcoming-marketing-workshop-a-tasty-combination-of-my-passions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this workshop combines multiple things I love<\/a>, including helping small business people succeed and supporting creative women in their pursuits.
