Wanting to change the world is a lofty goal, but according to a recent post by Public Words, it comes down to some basic principles.
\nIn an article headlined, “How to Change the World \u2013 5 Lessons from People Who Have,”<\/a> the communications strategists boil it down to five characteristics.
\nMy very streamlined summary:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 Take the plunge.\u00a0 <\/b>No one ever gives you permission to start doing something different.\u00a0 You have to take the risk.\u00a0 There is no magic moment when all your colleagues in your day job say, \u201cIt\u2019s time \u2013 go for it!\u201d\u00a0 That voice has to come from inside you.
\n2.\u00a0 Start with passion, keep going with focus and hard work.\u00a0 <\/b>There\u2019s no substitute for putting in the hours \u2013 the passion just gets you started.
\n3.\u00a0 Always look through the filter.\u00a0 <\/b>Whatever your particular point of view is, you have to look at the world with that lens \u2013 always.\u00a0 Every moment becomes an opportunity for a new insight, a new data point, a new addition to your bank of stories and wisdom.\u00a0 Even downtime is an opportunity, always.
\n4.\u00a0 Sideways moves are OK \u2013 good, even.\u00a0 <\/b>If you\u2019re creating something new, it \u2013 by definition \u2013 probably isn\u2019t out there already.\u00a0 So there\u2019s no corner office or neat job title waiting you \u2013 you have to get there in a series of sideways moves and approximations.
\n5.\u00a0 Create it, don\u2019t wait for it.\u00a0 <\/b>If it doesn\u2019t exist already, then you are going to have to create it, eventually.\u00a0 Don\u2019t wait for permission or a phone call.\u00a0 Instead, start something new.\u00a0 People won\u2019t get it, they\u2019ll tell you it won\u2019t work, they\u2019ll ignore you.\u00a0 Until one day, when it is<\/i> working, and everyone says, \u201cOh yeah, I knew it all along.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
