{"id":5196,"date":"2013-07-15T05:45:15","date_gmt":"2013-07-15T09:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/?p=5196"},"modified":"2019-06-07T13:39:05","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T17:39:05","slug":"marketing-monday-social-media-is-about-being-social","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/marketing-monday-social-media-is-about-being-social\/","title":{"rendered":"Marketing Monday: Social media is about being social"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sxsw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SXSW Interactive<\/a>, I heard a speaker say something that made me want to leap up, throw my hands in the air and yell, &#8220;Amen!&#8221;<br \/>\nHe suggested that many new technologies, whether that&#8217;s smartphones, social media or the Internet itself, have been around long enough that we should no longer be infatuated with their gee-whiz factor and instead bring the focus around to how they help us live our lives better.<br \/>\nFor example, does anyone get all breathless talking about having cable television, or do they instead talk about their favorite shows?<br \/>\n(Sadly, no, I don&#8217;t remember whose talk this was. The result of taking in too many presentations and having them all blur together.)<br \/>\nSince social media has &#8220;social&#8221; right in its name, let me give you just a few examples of how Twitter has improved my social life:<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5202\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5202\" style=\"width: 154px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5202\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/amanda-williamsburg.jpg\" alt=\"Amanda Hirsch\" width=\"154\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/amanda-williamsburg.jpg 392w, https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/amanda-williamsburg-255x300.jpg 255w, https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/amanda-williamsburg-370x435.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 154px) 100vw, 154px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amanda Hirsch<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n1) Shortly after we moved to Brooklyn, I set up a saved search in <a href=\"https:\/\/web.tweetdeck.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TweetDeck<\/a> for mentions of my neighborhood, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search\/realtime?q=%22brooklyn%20heights%22&amp;src=typd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brooklyn Heights<\/a>.&#8221; I was curious what people were saying about my new home. One day I noticed the Twitter handle &#8220;ZENyc&#8221; talking about finding peace and relaxation in New York.<br \/>\nI was intrigued because ZENyc, also a blog, seemed so aligned with my blog&#8217;s mission of living life intentionally and because this person seemed to be just a short walk away.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/amandahirsch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amanda Hirsch<\/a>, who has since retired her ZENyc blog and Twitter handle, has become one of my favorite people in Brooklyn. They included Preservation Hall\u00a0 (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PresHall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@PresHall<\/a>) and the New Orleans Bingo Show (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheBingoShow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><s>@<\/s>TheBingoShow<\/a>).<br \/>\nIn New Orleans, there&#8217;s a lot of cross pollination in music, and one of the leaders of Bingo is also one of the managers at Preservation Hall: Ron Rona (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RonnieNumbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><s>@<\/s>RonnieNumbers<\/a>). When Ron followed me back personally, I tweeted with geeky enthusiasm and we began a Twitter conversation about New York, music and marketing.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s turned into a real-life friendship with Ron and a magically surreal relationship with Preservation Hall, where I&#8217;ve gotten to know many of the talented people who are on the team behind the scenes and on stage. We had the kind of coffee date that felt like catching up with a long-lost friend. Because we&#8217;d been Twitter acquaintances for so long, maybe it was like meeting a pen pal.<br \/>\nDuring a Fourth of July visit to New Orleans, I enjoyed a hangout with Karen and her husband, Jeff, talking about the New Orleans music scene, the French Quarter real estate market, summer weather and so many other things that the time flew by entirely too quickly.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5207\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5207\" style=\"width: 103px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5207    \" src=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/lauree-ostrofsky-mugshot.jpg\" alt=\"Lauree Ostrofsky\" width=\"103\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/lauree-ostrofsky-mugshot.jpg 399w, https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/lauree-ostrofsky-mugshot-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/lauree-ostrofsky-mugshot-370x556.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 103px) 100vw, 103px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lauree Ostrofsky<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n4) My newest from-Twitter-to-real-life friend is Lauree Ostrofsky (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SimplyLeap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><s>@<\/s>SimplyLeap<\/a>). A few weeks back, I saw she was tweeting back and forth with my pal Lara Zielin (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/larazielin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@larazielin<\/a>), then shortly thereafter she was tweeting with Amy Throndsen (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amyserves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@amyserves), <\/a>who had been part of <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/2012\/01\/05\/kicking-off-blogversation-2012-join-the-conversation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blogversation in 2012<\/a>. I figured if Lauree knew both these ladies, there was a good chance I&#8217;d like her.<br \/>\nTurned out Lauree had recently left her home in D.C. and was housesitting in NYC while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplyleap.com\/the-other-side-of-a-big-leap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">she prepared for her next big adventure<\/a>, so we met for coffee &#8212; and much like meeting Karen, time flew by and I knew I&#8217;d met a kindred spirit.<br \/>\n<strong>A few morals to all of these stories:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Technology led me to people I like and have much in common with, but who I might never have met without Twitter<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s worth finding the needle in the haystack. Twitter has millions of users and probably the vast majority are creating content I don&#8217;t care about.<\/li>\n<li>Tools help. I use <a href=\"https:\/\/support.twitter.com\/articles\/96646-how-to-save-searches#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saved searches<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paynesbrain.com\/the-10-best-twitter-directories-to-grow-your-twitter-followers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter directories <\/a>to find people tweeting about topics of interest to me, and I sometimes take a recommendation from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/who_to_follow\/suggestions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter&#8217;s who to follow list.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Human curation helps, too. I watch to see who my friends and colleagues retweet or reply to, and I seek out the Twitter accounts of people and businesses I like.<\/li>\n<li>Finding each other isn&#8217;t enough. Just like meeting a smart, interesting person at a party, you get to know each other by engaging in a conversation. In each of these stories, eventually trading 140 characters wasn&#8217;t enough and we started actually talking. Start by replying to someone, have an electronic conversation, see what happens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How has social media made my life better?
