The majority of their customers ordered exactly the same thing, the same way, every time. The woman who liked her mocha with six squirts of chocolate didn&#8217;t deviate by getting a chamomile tea once in a while.<br \/>\nBut my tastes are more variable. Generally I make my coffee at home and buying an espresso drink is a treat. Sometimes I want a chai latte with a shot of espresso. Sometimes I want a nonfat hazelnut latte. At holiday time, I&#8217;ll get a gingerbread latte or two as a treat. Once in a while, I get a standard brewed coffee because we&#8217;re out of milk at home and I like my java with milk and sugar.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s not just my preferences on what to get, but also where to get it, that shift.<br \/>\nFor example, we are in New Orleans for a long visit and so far we&#8217;ve visited <a href=\"http:\/\/dbabars.com\/dbano\/\">dba<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parasolsbarandrestaurant.com\/\">Parasol&#8217;s<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.revolutionnola.com\/\">R&#8217;evolution<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pralineconnection.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Praline Connection<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.erinrosebar.com\/index2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Erin Rose<\/a>\/ <a href=\"http:\/\/killerpoboys.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Killer Po Boys<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/datdognola.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dat Dog<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mollysatthemarket.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Molly&#8217;s<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/mellowmushroom.com\/store\/oakstreetnola\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mellow Mushroom<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Felixs-Restaurant-and-Oyster-Bar-Inc\/118400511510371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Felix&#8217;s<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spottedcatmusicclub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Spotted Cat<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/neworleans.superiorgrill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Superior Grill<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patobriens.com\/patobriens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/fiorellas-cafe-new-orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fiorella&#8217;s<\/a> &#8230; the only place we&#8217;ve eaten twice is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/guys-po-boys-new-orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy&#8217;s<\/a>, and that&#8217;s because we tried to get a po boy sandwich at nearby <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/domilise-sandwich-shop-and-bar-new-orleans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Domilise&#8217;s<\/a>, but it was closed that day. We were hungry and on foot and needed a plan B.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.preservationhall.com\/hall\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Preservation Hall <\/a>is one of my favorite places on earth and we&#8217;ve only heard music there once since we&#8217;ve been in town.<br \/>\nWhen we moved to Brooklyn, I fantasized about developing a brunch ritual &#8212; maybe every weekend or every other weekend, we&#8217;d go to the same place and tell our friends so people could join us if they wanted.<br \/>\nThe reality is, we aren&#8217;t creatures of habit.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/2009\/03\/21\/the-only-thing-we-have-to-fear-is-change-itself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I&#8217;ve written before<\/a> about the difference between neophiles, who enjoy discovering new things and change, and neophobes, who prefer the known and familiar.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/alevelpsychology.co.uk\/news\/interesting\/neophile-or-neophobe-the-difference-is-in-the-wiring.html\">EurekAlert press release <\/a>explains: A neophile is a person with a very strong attraction to novelty. Neophiles tend to get bored easily with old things, whether they are traditions, daily routines or objects. Neophiles clamour to get the latest technology \u2013 mobile phones, computers, software etc. Neophiles like trying out new ideas. Neophobes are the opposite: they hate change. They often hate neophiles because they bring about change more quickly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While I enjoy visiting an old favorite, often if we&#8217;re thinking of going out, I&#8217;m more interested in discovering someplace new to us, whether that&#8217;s a new spot that&#8217;s opened or an old, established place that&#8217;s maybe been recommended. We&#8217;re neophiles. We enjoy the exploration and discovery.<br \/>\nIf I&#8217;m sitting at an old favorite place or ordering the same thing yet again, what if there&#8217;s a place or dish I&#8217;ll like even better that I haven&#8217;t even tried yet?<br \/>\nStill, we have a few places in Brooklyn where staffers greet us with a warm, friendly smile of recognition: our nearby Middle Eastern grocery store <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sahadis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sahadi&#8217;s<\/a>; the pub around the corner from us, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterfrontalehouse.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=50&amp;Itemid=80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pete&#8217;s Waterfront Ale House<\/a>;\u00a0 a great NOLA-infused restaurant in Red Hook called <a href=\"http:\/\/fortdefiancebrooklyn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fort Defiance<\/a>; the bulk tea and spice shop below our apartment, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/two-for-the-pot-brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Two for the Pot<\/a>.<br \/>\nAnd maybe considering we aren&#8217;t very good at following the rules to develop regular status, we aren&#8217;t doing so bad.<br \/>\n<strong>Are you a regular someplace?
