I’ve read many articles about the value of saying yes<\/a> — but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it in financial terms as clear as this article by Susan Gregory Thoma<\/a><\/em>s on Daily Worth<\/a>:<\/em>

\nYet my first move was the opposite<\/strong>. I did want to find my tribe, so when I was asked to teach fiction writing at a local literary center\u2014$240<\/strong> (total) to teach a six-week course\u2014I agreed.
\nMy husband was appalled. How could I waste my time<\/strong> like that? I\u2019d practically taken on a volunteer<\/strong> job, he said. I know, I sighed, but I really like the students, their work is so ambitious, and I want to help them.
\nWeirdly, saying yes<\/strong> (when I could have said no) paid off. Three months later, several former students have hired me to work with them on a one-on-one basis. Those who can afford to pay my $130\/hour fee<\/strong> do; for those who can\u2019t, I barter services<\/strong> (one student\u2019s husband is a sculptor and teaches my girls art).
\nSo often there\u2019s an impulse to say no<\/strong>, when the immediate economic benefit isn\u2019t apparent. I\u2019ve revised my strategy to a more open-minded \u201csay yes whenever possible.\u201d You never know what unintended gains<\/strong> could be.
