{"id":2243,"date":"2010-09-02T07:45:11","date_gmt":"2010-09-02T11:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/?p=2243"},"modified":"2019-06-07T13:41:51","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T17:41:51","slug":"why-i-loathe-don-draper-part-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/why-i-loathe-don-draper-part-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I loathe Don Draper, part II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another season of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amctv.com\/originals\/madmen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Mad Men<\/a>, another round of Sunday night obsession with what America&#8217;s favorite misogynist is up to.<br \/>\nI wrote a while back about<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/newvinegrowing\/2010\/02\/02\/don-draper-is-a-loathsome-excuse-for-a-human-being\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> what a loathsome creep I think the lead character of this cult show is<\/a>, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/entertainment\/tv\/why_we_love_don_draper_JIPyK6pb3UfdIwO17wbq4L#ixzz0yI01rBYT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Linda Stasi at the New York Post did a far better job<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So, what&#8217;s his appeal? Simple.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/t\/Don_Draper\"> Don Draper <\/a>represents,  in his repressed way, everything we&#8217;re either not supposed to do or are  even <em>allowed<\/em> to do anymore.<br \/>\nHe smokes fantastic  amounts at work, in restaurants, at home and in the car with his kids.<br \/>\nHe drinks at lunch, at work, at home and before getting into his car.  He&#8217;d rather have sex than babysit.<br \/>\nHis favorite food group is  steer.<br \/>\nHe has random, unprotected sex. He tells his clients  what he really thinks of them.<br \/>\nHe doesn&#8217;t work out &#8212; he just  works. And he makes no apologies for any of it.<br \/>\nIn other words,  Don Draper does things that nowadays would land us in jail, at child  protective services, on the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/t\/Unemployment\"> unemployment <\/a>line or worse, at &#8220;<strong>Biggest Loser<\/strong>&#8221; fat  camp. And it looks like such uncivilized fun.<br \/>\nRead more: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/entertainment\/tv\/why_we_love_don_draper_JIPyK6pb3UfdIwO17wbq4L#ixzz0yI01rBYT\">http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/entertainment\/tv\/why_we_love_don_draper_JIPyK6pb3UfdIwO17wbq4L#ixzz0yI01rBYT<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I totally agree that <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.sfgate.com\/2010-08-30\/entertainment\/23220305_1_eric-stonestreet-comedy-series-modern-family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emmy-winning Mad Men<\/a> is beautiful to look at &#8212; the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.amctv.com\/mad-men\/fashion-file\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">costumes <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apartmenttherapy.com\/la\/inspiration\/set-decor-inspiration-mad-men-034363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sets <\/a>are spectacular &#8212; and it&#8217;s amusing to see what passes for <a href=\"http:\/\/thestir.cafemom.com\/big_kid\/108059\/mad_men_parenting_tips_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">good parenting <\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/features\/media\/article734834.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appropriate office behavior<\/a>.<br \/>\nBut can we all agree Don Draper is not sexy, he&#8217;s not a role model, he&#8217;s a white collar white male power fantasy?<br \/>\nI think Linda is right.
