An unscientific sampling:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <a href=\"How Will the iPad Transform Media?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How Will the iPad Transform Media?<\/a><\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/businesscenter\/article\/193325\/3_businesses_the_ipad_can_transform.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3 Businesses the iPad Can Transform<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/business\/index.ssf\/2010\/01\/apple_ipad_likely_to_transform.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple iPad is likely to transform media, business  presentations<\/a><\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.customerthink.com\/blog\/apple_s_ipad_just_good_enough_to_transform_the_publishingmedia_industries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple\u2019s iPad: Just Good Enough to Transform the Publishing\/Media  Industries<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While many Americans already <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/news\/2010\/02\/almost-a-third-of-americans-still-dont-use-the-net.ars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have a computer<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"http:\/\/mobihealthnews.com\/6178\/study-42-percent-of-u-s-uses-a-smartphone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">smart phone<\/a>, Apple is betting many of us are craving <a href=\"http:\/\/mossblog.allthingsd.com\/20100127\/apple-ipad-impressions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a third screen<\/a> &#8212; bigger and more functional than a phone, lighter and cheaper than a computer.<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s say you&#8217;d like to watch the <a href=\"http:\/\/techpp.com\/2010\/04\/16\/download-glee-iphone-app-ipad-app-smule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">latest episode of Glee<\/a> on the subway, or <a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/flickr\/id328407587?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">show baby pictures to Grandma<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/21\/cooking-tools-ipads-epicurious-vs-bigoven\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get a cooking tutorial in your kitchen<\/a>. Those are probably functions where the laptop is a little clunky but your cell phone is too small. So Steve Jobs hopes you want the Baby Bear &#8220;just right&#8221; tool.<br \/>\nThat consumers have shown a willingness to pay for apps on iTunes when they lament having to pay for anything on the Internet\u00a0 is very appealing to a media industry battered by the decline of print circulation, the increasing competition for eyeballs and the freefall of advertising spending during the recession.<br \/>\nBut will enough consumer want to spend several hundred dollars &#8212; iPad prices start at $499 &#8212; to really change the market? If you&#8217;ve already got a cell phone with a monthly plan, a laptop and cable TV, do you have enough room in your monthly budget and enough time you aren&#8217;t already spending absorbing content that you need another iSomething?
