{"id":7782,"date":"2017-02-09T12:30:45","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T18:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gnof.org\/?p=7782"},"modified":"2017-02-10T10:39:23","modified_gmt":"2017-02-10T16:39:23","slug":"financial-leadership-for-board-members-july-11-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/financial-leadership-for-board-members-july-11-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Financial Leadership for Board Members &#8211; July 11, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Greater New Orleans Foundation\u2019s Organizational Effectiveness (OE) Initiative is partnering with the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO) to present a Financial Leadership for Board Members workshop, hosted at the Center for Philanthropy.<\/p>\n<p>This session is designed for board members, executive directors, and senior staff who are interested in deepening their understanding of nonprofit governance and better aligning the work of the board to heighten board engagement and maximize its impact.<\/p>\n<p>Participants are encouraged to bring their bylaws, governance handbook, and recent board meeting agendas for reference during the series.<\/p>\n<p>This session provides a framework for understanding financial leadership specifically within the context of board governance.\u00a0 We\u2019ll focus first on how to read and understand key financial statements and give you hands-on practice with using those statements to assess your organization\u2019s overall financial health.\u00a0 Then, using your real experiences, we\u2019ll discuss how to frame conversations to inform board level decision-making.<strong> \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Objectives:<br \/>\n<\/strong>By the end of this course, participants will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assess your understanding of financial leadership and\u00a0identify areas of improvement.<\/li>\n<li>Use core nonprofit financial statements to evaluate your organization\u2019s financial health<\/li>\n<li>How to participate in financially grounded and informed governance decision-making<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The session will be held on\u00a0<strong>Tuesday, July 11th\u00a0<\/strong>from\u00a0<strong>9:00am-12noon<\/strong>\u00a0at the Center for Philanthropy. In the New Orleans area, he is a leader of LANO\u2019s efforts to expand and strengthen our service to hundreds of regional nonprofits.\u00a0Most recently the pastor of Faith Community United Methodist Church, in Lafayette, Dr. Sparks has longtime ties to New Orleans, both within the faith-based community and in higher education. He brings years of executive leadership experience to this position, with demonstrated excellence as a public speaker, educator, fund raiser, and a community activist and organizer. Dr. Sparks holds degrees from Columbia University, Southern Methodist University and a Doctorate in American History from Louisiana State University. Dr. Sparks\u2019s board leadership includes a current position as President of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), New Orleans Chapter.
