{"id":7760,"date":"2017-02-09T11:26:01","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T17:26:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gnof.org\/?p=7760"},"modified":"2017-03-31T09:23:37","modified_gmt":"2017-03-31T14:23:37","slug":"governance-fundamentals-and-board-roles-and-responsibilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/governance-fundamentals-and-board-roles-and-responsibilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Governance Fundamentals and Board Roles and Responsibilities &#8211; April 25, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Greater New Orleans Foundation\u2019s Organizational Effectiveness (OE) Initiative is partnering with the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO) to present a Governance Fundamentals and Board Roles and Responsibilities workshop.<\/p>\n<p>This session is designed for board members, executive directors, and senior staff who are interested in deepening their understanding of nonprofit governance and better aligning the work of the board to heighten board engagement and maximize its impact.<\/p>\n<p>Participants are encouraged to bring their bylaws, governance handbook, and recent board meeting agendas for reference during the series.<\/p>\n<p>In this workshop, we\u2019ll cover the following topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The purpose of nonprofit governance and the board\u2019s legal obligations of duty, loyalty and obedience.<\/li>\n<li>Using CompassPoint\u2019s <em>Governance and Management Support<\/em> tool, we\u2019ll discuss the specific roles and responsibilities of board members.<\/li>\n<li>How to tailor board engagement based on organizational needs and individual board members\u2019 interests, skills, and capacity.<\/li>\n<li>How to create a powerful leadership partnership among the board, executive director, and other staff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Learning Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand nonprofit governance and the purpose of a nonprofit board<\/li>\n<li>Understand the legal obligations of nonprofit board members.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the distinction between governance and management support; understand the board\u2019s roles and responsibilities in each area.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the interdependent governance relationship between the ED and the board.<\/li>\n<li>Have identified ideas for how to strengthen the partnership between the board and staff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The session will be held on <strong>Tue<\/strong><strong>sday, April 25th\u00a0<\/strong>from\u00a0<strong>9:00am-12noon<\/strong>\u00a0at the Center for Philanthropy (919 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130). Tasha\u2019s nonprofit career started at 15 when she became a volunteer at Shand\u2019s Teaching Hospital in Gainesville. After High School, Tasha majored in Communication &amp; Public Relations at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida.\u00a0 During her time at UWF, Tasha spearheaded the first fundraiser for the Gulf Coast Kid\u2019s House; a shelter housing victims of domestic violence. Tasha moved to Louisiana in 2013 and in recent years has served as Division Director for the March of Dimes, Assistant Director of Annual Giving at Southeastern University and currently serves as Director of Member Services for the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7728 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kay-Irby-Headshot-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Kay Irby Headshot\" width=\"164\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kay-Irby-Headshot-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kay-Irby-Headshot-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kay-Irby-Headshot-800x640.jpg 800w, https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kay-Irby-Headshot.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/>Kay M. Irby, Director of LANO North, has been the face of LANO, Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations, in Shreveport for the last eleven years, where she has served as Director of the association&#8217;s regional office and chief liaison to nonprofits in need of organizational development and training.\u00a0 This past summer she and her husband moved to Baton Rouge where she is continuing her work for LANO as the Director of Organizational Development.\u00a0 She has been a consultant and coach for nonprofit\u00a0boards\u00a0all over the state of Louisiana.\u00a0 Her training specialties include\u00a0Board\u00a0Governance, Succession Planning, and an array of Nonprofit Basics.
