The Form 990: It’s more than a required tax form

If your organization has a calendar year end and is required to file the Form 990, then you know it is due on May 15th<\/sup>! <\/strong>The Form 990, Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax<\/em>, was expanded and revised beginning in 2008 tax years to ensure that nonprofits follow the policy requirements imposed by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.\u00a0The Form 990 is intended to make nonprofits transparent, efficient, and use good governance practices.\u00a0 It is also a nonprofit\u2019s annual report to the community. If it is prepared effectively, the Form 990 can communicate a compelling mission, provide insight into the organization\u2019s operations, and convey that best practices are being implemented. However, if it is not prepared well, it can provide information to the IRS that an examination is warranted. Even if the IRS doesn\u2019t warrant examination, the public may call into question your activities and expenditures.<\/p>\n

About the Trainer<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Bonnie-Wyllie\"<\/a>Bonnie Wylie is a leader in the LaPorte Nonprofit Industry Group. She has extensive experience in all aspects of nonprofit, individual, estate, and trust tax compliance. Prior to joining LaPorte, Bonnie acquired 20 years of experience working with some of the area\u2019s largest local and national firms. Bonnie actively works to help nonprofit clients, area organizations, and boards meet legislative requirements. She also counsels them on accountability and transparency, largely in response to the 2008 Form 990 revisions, and she helps larger nonprofits meet the requirements of foreign financial reporting. Bonnie also provides nonprofit and board training on topics such as responsibilities and best governance practices, understanding financials, evaluating organizational performance, charitable gift planning, and annual tax compliance.<\/p>\n
