Her baby Jaden is eight months. It\u2019s because of Jaden that Katherine has turned her life around. She\u2019s given up prostituting, and she\u2019s working toward getting her GED. Katherine wants Jaden to have a good life. And she has no intention of losing him to Child Protective Services \u2013 something she\u2019s experienced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was raised with my mom, but my mom was abusive in so many ways,\u201d recalls Katherine. \u201cWe got taken away and I got put in my uncle\u2019s house and um, he did some stuff so\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Katherine has a long history of abuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got abused sexually, mentally and emotionally, and physically in foster care. It wasn\u2019t something I want my son to go through. So that\u2019s what brought me here,\u201d says Katherine \u2013 to the New Orleans Family Justice Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for my son I\u2019d still be prostituting,\u201d confesses Katherine. \u201cI would still be prostituting. Still making the money. Money\u2019s great but the things I do for it\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI often look upon our agency as a beacon that can take someone from crisis to confidence,\u201d says Sharon Henry, the community outreach coordinator at the New Orleans Family Justice Center. The Center provides free, wrap-around services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Whatever a client needs, the Family Justice Center makes sure she gets it. They partner with civil and legal attorneys, offer trauma recovery, job assistance, and also art classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were talking about whether Katherine liked art,\u201d says Ashley Ponson, Katherine\u2019s case manager at the Family Justice Center. \u201cI thought it would be good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I love art,\u201d confirms Katherine. \u201cI wanted to show you something,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>Katherine whips out a picture on her cell phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made it myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNice job,\u201d says Ponson, looking at the picture. \u201cYou got tomatoes in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomatoes, strawberries, avocado, cucumbers, broccoli, turkey. It was delicious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we were talking about.\u00a0 It\u2019s really great. You need to eat good healthy food, instead of just not eating. That\u2019s awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whatever help a person needs \u2013 from nutrition to therapy to resume building \u2013 Sharon Henry says the New Orleans Family Justice Center is here for the community, for anyone who\u2019s been abused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDomestic violence has no face.
