{"id":5522,"date":"2015-04-28T14:47:30","date_gmt":"2015-04-28T19:47:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gnof.org\/?p=5522"},"modified":"2015-06-19T15:25:10","modified_gmt":"2015-06-19T20:25:10","slug":"ymca-helps-prevent-type-two-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/ymca-helps-prevent-type-two-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"YMCA Helps Prevent Type Two Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/202999533&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The YMCA of Greater New Orleans is taking steps to reduce the burden of diabetes by offering a Diabetes Prevention Program, so that people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>When you think YMCA, what comes to mind?<\/p>\n<p>Volleyball, helping kids, swimming, gymnastics, the gym, the song.<\/p>\n<p>This is not about <em>that<\/em> YMCA\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0the weight machines, the pools, the catchy song by the Village People. No. Because the YMCA of Greater New Orleans does more than that. This is about the Y\u2019s Diabetes Prevention Program &#8211;\u00a0a program based on the National Institute of Health study that showed eating better and increasing physical activity leads to fewer new cases of type two diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>The Diabetes Prevention Program lasts a year. For the first 4 months, people at risk of developing the disease meet each week; after that, they meet once a month, for eight months. In each session, a trained lifestyle coach helps participants learn strategies for healthy eating, physical activity, and other lifestyle changes.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara Morris is one of those participants. \u201cI\u2019m borderline diabetic,\u201d explains Morris, \u201cand I come here to learn how to eat and I had a certain amount of weight to get off, which I did, and I\u2019m trying to find out how I can stay at that point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morris\u2019s class meets at the West Bank YMCA in Federal City. Gabrielle Kruse leads the class. She says pretty much everyone is there because their doctor sent them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t really had anyone come in on their own,\u201d says Kruse. \u201cAnd then a lot of times, they\u2019re taken off of their medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol, after being here for a few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The goal is for participants to lose seven percent of their body weight, and as you heard, Barbara Morris did that. Her doctor was thrilled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was so happy because she\u2019s the one that recommended me to come here,\u201d recalls Morris. \u201cShe said, you lost weight! You lost weight! So she said, I think you should lose 5 more pounds. I said, no I\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morris says she\u2019s happy with how she looks now. She\u2019s learned how to eat better, how to count her calories and grams of fat, and most importantly, she stopped drinking coke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have one or two cokes every day,\u201d confesses Morris. \u201cI started drinking my Crystal Light. I drink a little bit of coffee, and I learned that I couldn\u2019t stand not having sugar, but I learned to drink coffee without sugar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with changing how people <em>eat<\/em>, the program helps participants increase their physical activity to about 2 and a half hours each week. Kruse says she wants to get these folks moving &#8211;\u00a0doing things like brisk walking.<\/p>\n<p>Kruse starts class by getting caught up. \u201cWe haven&#8217;t\u00a0seen each other since last month,\u201d she reminds the class. \u201cAnything you struggled with this past month, or anything that went well that you want to share?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The exercising for me,\u201d volunteers Dorothy Wolfolk, \u201cand keeping track of my eating habits \u2013 three times a day. Because I had a bad problem of just maybe eating breakfast and skipping everything else. I\u2019ve gotten a lot better with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kruse teaches her students that skipping meals is not a healthy way to lose weight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we start skipping meals, our bodies go into starvation mode,\u201d explains Kruse, \u201cbecoming less efficient at using calories. Ms. Dorothy, do you want to share how you feel when you skip a meal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel off balance, my whole day kinda goes really bad,\u201d reports Wolfolk. \u201cIt got to be where it\u2019s: okay Dorothy, you\u2019ve got to start eating right. You\u2019ve got to do your breakfast, you\u2019ve got to do your lunch, and you\u2019ve got to do your dinner. I think in all I\u2019ve gotten better. I did have a breakfast this morning, and I did have a lunch cause I had it here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The YMCA\u2019s Diabetes Prevention Program takes place all over New Orleans &#8212; at worksites, in community centers and churches, and of course, at the Y, where participants, and their families, get a free three-month membership.<\/p>\n<p><em>Written by Eve Abrams for the Community IMPACT Series and produced by WWNO in partnership with the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
