48 nonprofit organizations win highly competitive IMPACT grants\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

New Orleans, LA | December 10, 2014 \u2013 The Greater New Orleans Foundation announced today the 48 nonprofit organizations that received 2014 IMPACT grants in the following categories: arts and culture; education; health; social services; and, youth development. Now in its sixth year, the IMPACT program is the Foundation\u2019s largest discretionary grantmaking program that awards grants to organizations that serve mostly low-income communities. This year the Foundation awarded a total of $960,000 to 48 nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe nonprofit organizations receiving IMPACT grants are working tirelessly to make this a thriving community for all,\u201d said Albert Ruesga, president and CEO of the Greater New Orleans Foundation. \u201cThe IMPACT grants would not be possible without the generous support from our donors, and we\u2019re humbled to be partners in philanthropy with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne way to address our obesity crisis is to educate students both inside and outside the classroom about the health benefits of eating fresh, local fruits and vegetables,\u201d said Kate Parker, executive director at Market Umbrella. \u201cWith our IMPACT grant, we\u2019ll double the number of students from 250 to 500 who will visit our Crescent City\u2019s Farmer\u2019s Market to taste and learn about Louisiana\u2019s seasonal produce and receive classroom activities that encourage healthy eating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over 160 applications were received and the rigorous review process included a site visit by Foundation staff, a careful study of the organization\u2019s financial information, and a review by the Foundation\u2019s grants committee. In addition to financial support, IMPACT grantees are also provided throughout the year with networking opportunities, communications assistance, and trainings and workshops on nonprofit best practices.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese funds will allow us to get more homeless teenagers off the streets,\u201d said Jim Kelly, executive director of Covenant House, an organization that has received an IMPACT grant for multiple years. \u201cBesides providing a warm bed and healthy meals, our teenagers receive counseling, employment and educational opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since its inception in 2009, the IMPACT Program has granted more than $5 million to more than 135 nonprofit organizations in the Greater New Orleans region.<\/p>\n
