I\u2019m the owner of Landrieu Concrete and Cement Industries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Picture huge piles of sand and gravel. Also, those big trucks with revolving drums.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re producing is a commodity, and it\u2019s driven by cost and pricing,\u201d says Landrieu. \u201cEverybody wants the cheapest price available. In order to be the cheapest, we have to look for ways to pinch pennies because when you\u2019re doing a high volume business, every penny adds up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So to save those pennies, Landrieu decided to make her business leaner by also making it greener.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Liz Shephard, I run LifeCity. We help make social and environmental impact profitable for business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Landrieu hired LifeCity, a company which claims any business can become environmentally responsible. The first step is figuring out where the business is wasting resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we\u2019re checking out this bin to see what they can recycle,\u201d says Shephard. \u201cAnd we\u2019re looking through it. There\u2019s lots of fast food bags with aluminum that can be recycled\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shephard lifts the lid on a trashcan and peers inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust from looking from the top of container, you can see about 40 percent of just what\u2019s on top is recyclable. So we can assume \u2014 without dumping this trashcan on the ground \u2014 that probably about 40 percent throughout is recyclable,\u201d says Chris Vizzini, who works with Progressive Waste Management, one of LifeCity\u2019s partners.<\/p>\n<p>Vizzini says if Landrieu Concrete and Cement Industries can start recycling they can reduce their costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA big part of that reduction in cost comes from us not having to spend money at a landfill, dumping it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because things like plastics, cardboard, aluminum and paper can be removed from the trash and sold to commodities dealers, instead of paying to dump their garbage, Landrieu Concrete can get money for their garbage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it has more value, therefore they don\u2019t charge as much, per se,\u201d says Shephard. That \u201csaves everybody some money, and keeps them out of landfills, and that\u2019s a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Progressive Waste Management is just one of the organizations LifeCity works with. Each organization offers a different expertise in improving environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing that makes LifeCity unique is we\u2019re collaborative consultants,\u201d says Shephard. \u201cWe provide a one-stop-shop and a group technical assistant team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So a business doesn\u2019t have to worry about managing and coordinating a bunch of different technical experts. LifeCity does that for them.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Nehrbass works with LifeCity\u2019s clients. She analyzes their business practices and looks for ways to increase their social and environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you run a business it\u2019s things like this that you don\u2019t have the time to do every day,\u201d she says. \u201cThey need help stepping away from the business to work on the business. Because it\u2019s hard to work on the business when you work in the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, at Landrieu Concrete, Nehrbass is analyzing how much water the company uses by filing a bucket and timing how long it takes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re doing is a water test to help them measure their water consumption for each of their individual tasks that happen during the operations,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>LifeCity then calculates how Landrieu Concrete can use, pay for, and waste less water, by doing things like building a rain catchment system or replacing old nozzles. Renee Landrieu, the owner of Landrieu Concrete, is thrilled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust going through the initial assessment opened our eyes about a lot of things we weren\u2019t paying attention to in manufacturing,\u201d she says. \u201cAreas you can say we weren\u2019t even thinking about, they\u2019ve really brought attention to \u2014 such as water, which is huge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, with LifeCity\u2019s help, the bills and the runoff won\u2019t be.<\/p>\n<p><em>Written by Eve Abrams for the Community IMPACT Series and produced by WWNO in partnership with the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
