Coaches encourage kids to bring out the best in themselves and each other, and kids learn the value of fair play, compassion, and respect.\u00a0 They also learn to become leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Recess has been disappearing in schools.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s too much fighting and bullying, too many boxes of band-aids gone through.\u00a0 In order to deal with this problem, about 40% of America\u2019s school districts have shortened or simply eliminated recess \u2013 which also makes more time for academics.<\/p>\n<p>But cutting recess comes at a big price.\u00a0 Studies show that when kids don\u2019t have recess, they have a much harder time in class.<\/p>\n<p>Enter\u00a0Playworks, a national organization with a Louisiana branch.\u00a0 They have another solution: support recess.\u00a0 Playworks believes when recess becomes a healthy, integral part of the school day, kids carry that positive experience with them beyond the playground.<\/p>\n<p>Fifth grader Keyanna Nelson, is a junior coach at Edgar P. Harney Spirit of Excellence Academy in New Orleans.\u00a0 She says everyday, \u201cthe first thing we do when we go outside is make sure the kids are doing what they supposed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keyanna had to apply to be a junior coach. And to stay one, she has to train weekly and meet behavioral and academic expectations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to preserve recess at every elementary school,\u201d says Dana Greenup, the Program Director for\u00a0Playworks Louisisana. \u201cWe think it\u2019s just as important as academic and classroom time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the issues of childhood obesity and diabetes, taking movement out of a school day is just really not beneficial for the kids,\u201d says Laverne Pitts, Executive Director for Playworks Louisiana. \u201cIf a child gets on a bus to go to a school at 7 o\u2019clock in the morning and may not get home till 7 pm, the parents may not feel comfortable letting their kids go outside to play so then it\u2019s more screen time. So this in some ways may be the only physical activity that these kids get throughout the entire day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good brain break,\u201d explains Greenup.\u00a0 \u201cThey get those wiggles out.\u00a0 They\u2019re moving, they\u2019re sweating, they\u2019re laughing, they\u2019re meeting new friends \u2013 because they\u2019re not just confined to their classroom, and they get to learn those social skills.\u00a0 There\u2019s less chaos in the classroom because they\u2019re resolving conflict with rock, paper, scissors.\u00a0 They just love to come to school now because they look forward to recess.<\/p>\n<p><em>Written by Eve Abrams for the Community IMPACT Series and produced by WWNO in partnership with the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
