Created in 2007, OPEN exists to serve as a catalyst and conduit for broad and diverse community engagement by facilitating more collaboration between community members, stakeholders, and policy makers.<\/p>\n<p>Cyndi Nguyen and her son Sean are walking along the Borne Learning Trail in the Michoud Community in New Orleans East.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat shape is this?\u00a0 Is this a rectangle?\u201d Cyndi asks Sean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA diamond,\u201d Sean answers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA triangle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Borne Learning Trail is a concrete trail with shapes, numbers, letters, and animals painted on it in bright colors.\u00a0 It\u2019s designed to help parents interact with their kids in ways that foster development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine ten!\u201d counts Sean. \u201cMom! It\u2019s turtles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the trail are posts with tips for parents about how to engage their kids.\u00a0 They say things like \u201cpretend to move like an animal,\u201d or \u201ctell stories about yourself and your family,\u201d and \u201cBegin with: when I was little&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re at the second post right now,\u201d explains Nguyen.\u00a0 \u201cSo this one is Watch, learn, stop, and play. So they give you point, guidance and reference to what you should do.\u00a0 Cause you know sometimes as parent and child you run out of stuff to do. The kids think you\u2019re boring, and we probably think the same way about our kids, but this allows us to motivate interaction.\u00a0 So they say watch what your children like to do. Is it playing with other children, looking at bugs, or heading for the slide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Especially when she\u2019s exhausted from a long day, Nguyen says the posts keep her thinking about what her kids should be doing.\u00a0 They help her strike up conversations &#8212; and not just in English.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Vietnamese, but I speak both languages,\u201d explains Nguyen. \u201cBut can you just imagine a parent coming out here and not being able to read English. And so we have it in Vietnamese as well as in Spanish!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is New Orleans\u2019 first Born Learning Trail, and it\u2019s the first one\u00a0 in the nation in Vietnamese.\u00a0 It came about through a partnership with OPEN, Orleans Public Education Network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, OPEN\u2019s work is really about ensuring that as a collective community we are building a successful path for children\u2019s success,\u201d says Deirdre Johnson Burel, OPEN\u2019s Executive Director.\u00a0 Burel says the Born Learning Trail helps with OPEN\u2019s core mission: to ensure that each community has enough assets for kids, so that when they start school, they\u2019re ready.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we all always think about is our kids need to know their ABC\u2019s and 1, 2, 3\u2019s,\u201d says Burel.\u00a0 \u201cThey have to know that, but they have to be physically healthy, their social emotional maturity, their motor skills.\u00a0 And so what the skill does through exploration, through problem solving, through engagement, through actually walking the trail, parents interact with their child around those critical developmental domains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, as parents you always say: what should I be doing?\u201d confesses Nguyen.\u00a0 \u201cAnd you doing have a handbook, but having this accessible in a park, in a public area, it\u2019s like a cheat sheet for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Written by Eve Abrams for the Community IMPACT Series and produced by WWNO in partnership with the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
