{"id":3908,"date":"2014-02-13T22:12:10","date_gmt":"2014-02-13T22:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gnof.org\/?p=3908"},"modified":"2014-02-13T22:14:43","modified_gmt":"2014-02-13T22:14:43","slug":"black-alliance-for-educational-options","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/black-alliance-for-educational-options\/","title":{"rendered":"BAEO in New Orleans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/134671019&amp;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_artwork=true\" height=\"166\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Black Alliance for Educational Options is a <i>national<\/i> organization, but in order to fulfill their mission \u2014\u00a0to empower low income and working class Black families to increase high quality educational options for all black students \u2014\u00a0BAEO knows to work really locally.\u00a0\u201cBAEO is an organization that believes in organizing both at the city leaders level as well as the parent level,\u201d says Ethan Ashley, the director of community outreach for BAEO in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley says when you put city leaders together with parents, there\u2019s the potential to create real change.\u00a0\u201cWe believe you can\u2019t do it without one or the other, and when you bring them together, there\u2019s power there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BAEO tries to connect the dots between innovative things happening in education \u2014\u00a0anywhere \u2014\u00a0and better educational choices happening here, in New Orleans, for all black children.\u00a0\u00a0 On a regular basis, Ashley meets with community leaders and parent liaisons, like Travis Chase.<\/p>\n<p>I joined them for one of their meetings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to talk to you briefly,\u201d says Ashley to Chase, \u201cand just get your sense of what you thought about the school tour we were able to take you to go visit schools in the DC area to see the difference between the charters here and the charters there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I found most impressive on that visit,\u201d replies Chase, \u201cis the massive peer to peer learning cohorts.\u201d\u00a0Travis Chase works in the development office of his alma mater, Dillard University. And in case you did not catch it, his last name is Chase \u2014\u00a0as in Dooky Chase Restaurant, which his grandma runs.<\/p>\n<p>Travis Chase is talking about the charter schools he saw in DC, run by Friendship Charter.\u00a0 Chase loved the culture these schools created among students: \u201cLet\u2019s influence each other to study, let\u2019s influence each other to be better, let\u2019s take pride in: we\u2019re going to college.\u201d\u00a0Travis Chase was impressed by the robotics and engineering teams, but most importantly, it was how these DC schools followed up with their graduates even after they left high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they say, hey this is our mission, this is our core vision to get you to college, they see them <i>through<\/i> college not just <i>to,\u201d<\/i> emphasizes Chase.\u00a0 \u201cNot just here we\u2019re going to get you to Tulane, Loyola, Dillard, UNO, and Xavier.\u00a0 No, we\u2019re going to stay in touch with you until you graduate from Tulane, Loyola, Xavier, Dillard, or UNO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Chase talks, Ethan Ashley scribbles notes.\u00a0\u201cWe were really keen on making sure that we took certain leaders to go see that,\u201d says Ashley.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ashley asks Chase if some of the things he saw in the DC charter schools could be implemented here in New Orleans.\u00a0 He talks about a specific new charter BAEO is helping to start, called NolaTech.\u00a0\u201cI would love to be able to link you with that,\u201d Ashley tells Chase, \u201cand be able to really speak highly of what could be done and what could be seen on this front, here in New Orleans for this Charter Management Organization.\u00a0 You know we don\u2019t want to keep spinning our wheels with some of this stuff.\u00a0 If\u00a0 you know something works, you see it working, you\u2019ve seen it work, let\u2019s do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is just one way BAEO helps support educational reform. BAEO also tries to make sure parents know what educational options already exist.<\/p>\n<p>Kaleshe Garrison is BAEO\u2019s Family and Community Organizer in New Orleans.\u00a0 She wants parents to know that vouchers, or scholarships, may also be a choice.\u00a0\u201cBAEO wants people to understand just like you see this charter school application &#8212; here\u2019s all your choices for charter schools &#8212; however here\u2019s the scholarship application.\u00a0 It\u2019s right behind the re-enrollment page.
