{"id":3744,"date":"2014-01-09T20:10:44","date_gmt":"2014-01-09T20:10:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gnof.org\/?p=3744"},"modified":"2014-01-09T20:20:41","modified_gmt":"2014-01-09T20:20:41","slug":"woodlands-conservancy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/woodlands-conservancy\/","title":{"rendered":"A Forested Wetland &#8211; Greater New Orleans&#8217; Best Kept Secret"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/128708728&amp;color=ff6600&amp;auto_play=false&amp;show_artwork=true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re within a 609 acre forested wetland.\u00a0 This is in Plaquemines Parish.\u00a0My name is Katie Brasted.\u00a0 I\u2019m the Executive Director at Woodlands Conservancy.\u00a0It is, I think, one of Greater New Orleans\u2019 best kept secrets.\u00a0Driving, we\u2019re about 8 miles from the CBD.<\/p>\n<p>Now we all understand how we\u2019re in the center of a bowl.\u00a0 So the deeper you go into the forest, you\u2019re going toward the lower lying area.\u00a0 There are more cypress the further you go back.\u00a0 We have also a lot of box elder, water oak, a lot of hackberry, a lot of elderberry, there\u2019s some ash and persimmon, mulberry, which the birds really like.<\/p>\n<p>There are three otters live right over there.\u00a0 If you\u2019re here early enough in the morning, you can see the otters.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen a mink.\u00a0 There are bald eagles.\u00a0 So it\u2019s a pretty unique habitat to be so close to a metropolitan city.\u00a0 And if we don\u2019t preserve that as contiguous, then you\u2019ll lose that habitat for the wildlife. The species will drop out.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more canopy the farther back.\u00a0 Because I think what happens is the hurricane sheers off at the edge of the forest.\u00a0US Fish and Wildlife Service tells us that within the next thirty-five to fifty years, this will be one of the largest land masses between open water and the city of New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>With the continual rate of wetland loss and relative sea level rise, this is a very important natural sponge to protect this community, and it is a substantial wind buffer to lessen the strength of storms.<\/p>\n<p>Open land has a real value.\u00a0 I think there are those who see open land as a development or a commercial area that hasn&#8217;t happened yet.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll show you our centennial tree.\u00a0 Honestly, even though this is the alive-in-1812 tree, it sadly is also way to teach people about subsidence and what happens to a bottomland hardwood forest when you put it under pump.\u00a0 Typically, this is where the soil would be.\u00a0 So you can see that the soil in this area has subsided like three to four feet.<\/p>\n<p>See how it\u2019s already leaning?\u00a0 I imagine another hurricane will probably just take it away.<\/p>\n<p>If you look at this forest now \u2014\u00a0when we say, oh this is one of the last stands of bottomland hardwoods \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s not going to be a bottomland hardwood forest forever because of the pumping.\u00a0 Sometimes you\u2019ll some regenerating, and you\u2019ll see a few seedlings, but then they die out.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t have that alternating wet and dry periods that cypress need to survive.\u00a0 So, the ones here will probably be the last ones here.<\/p>\n<p>Our motto is creating a legacy for future generations.\u00a0 If we\u2019re not proactive and set aside green space like this, then it won\u2019t be there for the enjoyment of our children and their children.\u00a0 And that seems sort of selfish not to do that, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p><em>Written by Eve Abrams for the Community IMPACT Series and produced by WWNO in partnership with the Greater New Orleans Foundation.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Learn more about the <a title=\"woodlands conservancy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.woodlandsconservancy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Woodlands Conservancy here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019re within a 609 acre forested wetland.\u00a0 This is in Plaquemines Parish.\u00a0My name is Katie Brasted.\u00a0 I\u2019m the Executive Director at Woodlands Conservancy.\u00a0It is, I think, one of Greater New Orleans\u2019 best kept secrets.\u00a0Driving, we\u2019re about 8 miles from the CBD.
