And Willie is working two boards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m helping her,\u201d Willie explains.<\/p>\n<p>Willie is intellectually and developmentally delayed, but compared to his neighbors at the bingo table\u2014many of whom have a very hard time speaking and are in wheelchairs with little mobility\u2014Willie is in great shape. Plus, he\u2019s really charming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look good today, baby,\u201d he tells me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got BINGO,\u201d declares Willie. \u201cBingo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Willie gets Bingo everyone in the room cheers. \u201cAll right Willie! Willie\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re seeing adults around here, but they have that beautiful, child-like mentality,\u201d says Anna Toujas, the Associate Director of Communication for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Toujas says these adults \u2014\u00a0with mental, physical, and developmental disabilities \u2014\u00a0are an extremely vulnerable population. Catholic Charities makes sure they\u2019re not a forgotten population.<\/p>\n<p>Toujas says Catholic Charities provides these adults with stability and a sense of family. \u201cIt\u2019s taking care of a child: attending to their needs, making sure they\u2019re eating right, making sure they have activities, making sure they\u2019re safe, and making sure they\u2019re cared for and loved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of these adults live in small group homes or at a larger facility called Padua House, and they attend New Directions Adult Day Health Care Center for socialization. All day long, they interact \u2014\u00a0with each other and their care givers. Working in small groups, they learn the day of the week, the address of the center, and how to spell their name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey develop a bond, like they call them &#8216;mom,'&#8221; says Trinette Cambrice, the lead service coordinator of New Directions.\u00a0\u201cEverybody does exercise, even our wheelchair clients. Not like us, but they have a form of exercise, so that\u2019s a part of our daily program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would that look like?\u201d I ask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving their arms, or mouth,\u201d she answers. \u201cOr head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cambrice points to a woman bending her elbow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee what she\u2019s doing right there? She\u2019s moving. That\u2019s exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More physically mobile adults, like Willie, help with cleaning. Willie especially loves working outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love New Directions,\u201d he tells me. \u201cThey treat you real good. We go on field trips, have parties and everything. I like it here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Catholic Charities says they recognize all people as individuals, who, first and foremost, deserve dignity and respect. They say their job is is to advocate for those in need\u2014 and not just those with disabilities, like the folks at New Directions, but all sorts of people, with all sorts of challenges. They work with immigrants, refugees, the homeless, children and adults, folks with mental health issues, and victims of domestic violence and abuse. They help people navigate the legal system, the healthcare system, immigration and much more.<\/p>\n<p>Sister Majorie Hebert, the president and CEO of Catholic Charities for the Archdiocese of New Orleans says they serve people of all religions and nationalities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCatholic Charities Serves all people,\u201d says Sister Hebert. \u201cWe don\u2019t serve people because they\u2019re Catholic.
