In order to provide emergency relief for victims of Typhoon Haiyan where 9.5 million people are affected in nine regions across the Philippines and over 600,000 have been displaced, the Greater New Orleans Foundation has opened the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund. Proceeds from this fund will go towards organizations offering immediate, emergency relief to areas across the Philippines that are seeking crucial assistance. The Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund will also be used for long-term recovery efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know from past disasters such as Hurricane Sandy, the Haiti earthquake, and our own disasters, including the Gulf Coast Oil Spill and Hurricane Katrina, that getting to a state of full recovery takes years,\u201d says Albert Ruesga, Ph.D., President and CEO of the Greater New Orleans Foundation. \u201cWe understand the importance of focusing on both short-term and long-term recovery efforts especially in the face of a disaster this catastrophic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Philippine officials report approximately 10,000 (spanning 6 separate islands) are feared to be dead. It is expected that Typhoon Haiyan will leave hundreds of thousands of people without permanent shelter and drastically affect people\u2019s livelihoods, especially in fishing and farming communities.<\/p>\n
