{"id":3547,"date":"2013-11-01T15:56:28","date_gmt":"2013-11-01T15:56:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gnof.org\/?p=3547"},"modified":"2013-11-01T16:43:34","modified_gmt":"2013-11-01T16:43:34","slug":"dedicated-health-leaders-albert-schweitzer-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.communify.me\/gnof\/dedicated-health-leaders-albert-schweitzer-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"Dedicated Health Leaders &#8211; Albert Schweitzer Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/117657745\" height=\"166\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s lunchtime at the Renew Cultural Arts Academy, and that means a group of medical students from Louisiana State University are sitting down with kindergarten, first, and second graders to talk about the food that\u2019s on their plates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what do you use your protein for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMakes you strong!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMakes you strong.\u00a0 Got to have big muscles, huh?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About a dozen medical students are equipped with colored building blocks: red for protein, green for carbohydrates, and yellow for fat.<\/p>\n<p>Jaden Kifer, a second year medical student at LSU and a co-leader of the Smart Caf\u00e9, explains:\u00a0 \u201cThe concept that we\u2019re trying to build today is that proteins are going to help build your muscles, carbohydrates are rapid energy that you can eat right away, and fat \u2014\u00a0if they know what it is \u2014\u00a0we try to relate it to a piggy bank; it\u2019s good energy you can use for later.<\/p>\n<p>Kifer says Smart\u00a0Caf\u00e9\u00a0\u201cstands for: students mentors advising real time choices about food and eating.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of a long acronym so we just like calling it Smart\u00a0Caf\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do is actually change habits \u2014\u00a0so they get in the habit of choosing to get the health food from the lunch line and then hopefully at home choosing to eat healthy food, encouraging their parents to buy healthier food,\u201d explains Kate Howe, who is also a medical student at LSU and the other co-leader of Smart Caf\u00e9.\u00a0 Howe is also getting a masters degree in public health.\u00a0 But before this, Howe taught middle school for four years in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing I would noticed with my kids is that they would snack all day \u2014\u00a0on noodles or sunflower seeds or hot chips.\u00a0 And then they wouldn&#8217;t eat the school lunch. They\u2019d come through the school line, they\u2019d get their tray. You know it\u2019s all Federally funded or reduced price lunch.\u00a0 They would literally walk out of the lunch line and put it in the trash can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Howe says her students were filling up on salt and sugar but not eating anything they need to grow \u2014\u00a0like protein or vitamins.\u00a0 Now she aims to change that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can get kids eating healthy food, down the road that\u2019s going to mean less cardiovascular disease, it\u2019s going to mean less diabetes, it\u2019s going to mean less colon cancer.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to have a lot of really long term effects that in the end will make population healthier as a whole and cut back on health care costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Howe\u2019s goal of changing New Orleans\u2019 health over the long term is part of the reason she\u2019s a Schweitzer Fellow.\u00a0 The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship is a national program whose goal is to develop leaders who are dedicated and skilled in addressing the health needs of underserved communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the program tries to do is teach these medical students and law students and dental students that you can have a career, and your career can be fulfilling, but you can still serve,\u201d says Pritesh Ghandi, the Chairman for the New Orleans Schweitzer Fellowship Advisory Board, and a former Schweitzer fellow. \u201cThe idea is that once you\u2019ve gone through the fellowship, you are a fellow for life,and it is the expectation that you will be a change maker in your community.\u00a0 That you will enter your community, you will work hand in hand with community leaders to develop and implement sustainable, impactful programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are currently 12 Schweitzer fellows in New Orleans\u00a0\u2014 from all of the city\u2019s universities.\u00a0 Fellows propose, design, and implement a project which focuses on the physical or emotional health of communities in need.\u00a0 About a quarter of this year\u2019s Schweitzer Fellows have projects relating to obesity and nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey commit to this fellowship for their entire life.\u00a0 They commit to making sustainable programs that have outcomes that are measurable and that will make a difference in the lives of those that they serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schweitzer Fellow Kate Howe says to think of it as a breeding ground where good ideas become real programs.\u00a0 \u201cBeing a Schweitzer fellow actually gives me the skills that I need to change the way people behave and improve their health outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Written and produced by Eve Abrams for the Community IMPACT Series and produced by WWNO in partnership with the Greater New Orleans Foundation.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Learn more about the <a title=\"Schweitzer Fellows\" href=\"http:\/\/www.schweitzerfellowship.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Albert Schweitzer Fellowship here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s lunchtime at the Renew Cultural Arts Academy, and that means a group of medical students from Louisiana State University are sitting down with kindergarten, first, and second graders to talk about the food that\u2019s on their plates. \u201cSo what do you use your protein for?\u201d \u201cMakes you strong!\u201d \u201cMakes you strong.\u00a0 Got to have&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":37,"featured_media":3549,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[30],"tags":[73,573,138,576,326,574,575,572],"class_list":["post-3547","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-our-community","tag-charter","tag-doctor","tag-health","tag-healthy-foods","tag-human-services","tag-medical","tag-renew-school","tag-schweitzer-fellow"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.3 -
